Before attending law school, Sarah obtained a bachelor's degree in literature from Antioch College in 1975, a Ph.D. in English Literature from The Ohio State University in 1982, and taught English at Illinois State, Ohio State, and Cleveland State Universities. Sarah obtained a J.D. from Cleveland Marshall College of Law in 1995. In 1994-1995, she was a visiting student at the University of North Dakota School of Law. Before opening her own family law practice in November, 2012, Sarah worked as a law clerk for the Honorable Russell Anderson, as an Assistant Polk County (Minnesota) Attorney, as a Clinical Instructor in the Legal Aid Association at the University of North Dakota School of Law, as a staff attorney for the Northeast Central Judicial District, as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Clinical Education Program at the University of North Dakota School of Law, and as an Associate Attorney at Pearson, Christensen, & Clapp in Grand Forks, North Dakota, where she practiced primarily in the areas of insurance defense, personal injury, and domestic relations.

Sarah is a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar Association of North Dakota, the Minnesota State Bar Association, the Greater Grand Forks County Bar Association, and the Randy H. Lee Chapter of the American Inns of Court. She currently serves as President of the Randy H. Lee American Inn of Court and is Vice President of the Women's Law Section of the State Bar Association of North Dakota. She is a former member and former Chair of the Inquiry Committee Northeast of the State Bar Association of North Dakota and has served on the Board of Directors of the Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra and the Northern Valley Youth Orchestras.

Sarah is married and has two adult children. Sarah's husband, John Madden, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of North Dakota. In her spare time, Sarah enjoys reading, music, petting her cats, and walking her dog.
